The All Ceylon Makkal Congress is delighted to extend its sincere thanks to the Hon. Prime minister Ranil Wicramasinghe for having taken timely action to debar the attempts by the security forces to ban the , Nikab and Abayah the Muslim Women’s attire.

The right to practice one’s Religion and to follow its preachings is guaranteed in the constitution of Sri Lanka. Therefore we thank the Primeminister under the able leadership of His Excellency The President Maithripala Sirisena. for upholding the constitutional right and honouring the democratic freedom.

The subtle and ingenious attempts to introduce the banning of Burkas, Nikabs and Abayahs in the pretext and under the guise of security threats is the unscrupulous venture of the extremist groups opposed to Muslims.

The Muslims women’s dress, specialy the Abayas which is normally black in colour, is akin to the dress worn by our Christian sisters which is white in colour and Silmaatha’s dress which is in saffron colour, in respect of covering the body.

The Abaya the Muslim women’s religious attire can do no harm even to an ant. There is not a single incident legitimately reported where the abaya was used for terrorist activities.

We consider any attempt purposefully and deliberately to connect any violent activities with abaya is nothing, but an outcome and the projection of the religious bigots and hate mongering religious groups.

Hypothetically, if we admit that ladies are free to wear revealing and transparent garments, then it should be equally admitted that the ladies also should have the right to cover their body as they want and be modest and to have a decent walk in the street.

“One man’s food is another man’s poison”. It is the matter of understanding and tolerance.
